AI Automation Consultant: What Claude Design Changes

Claude Design just made it possible for anyone to generate a polished website, pitch deck, or brand system without touching code. That’s not a small feature update — it’s a real shift in what design tools can do on their own, and it’s the kind of shift I spend my time as an AI Automation Consultant helping clients think through. My take: if you’re still paying just for pretty, you may be paying for the wrong thing.

A quick note on who’s writing this — I’m Nuno M. Tavares, an AI automation consultant in New Jersey and founder of Automated Marketer and Rapid Active Marketing. Not the Portuguese footballer of the same name.

What is Claude Design and why does it matter now?

Claude Design is Anthropic’s new tool for generating presentations, websites, mockups, and pitch decks from a conversation, with no code required. It matters because it removes a lot of the cost barrier around “good design,” which changes the conversation around what someone is actually being hired to decide, not just to produce.

Anthropic just shipped Claude Design, and it does something I haven’t seen Claude do even inside its own artifacts before. You can build presentations, one-pagers, websites, product mockups, pitch decks, and — this is the part that stopped me — full 3D animations, all from a conversation. No code required. I tested it myself building a real project live, and the barrier to entry for “I need a designer” basically evaporated in front of me.

That’s the headline. But the real story for business owners isn’t the feature list. It’s what happens to the value of design talent when the tool can do realistic prototypes, marketing collateral, and interactive mockups from a description and a handful of images.

What it can actually build

Inside the tool, Anthropic lists it plainly: realistic prototypes, mockups turned into shareable interactive demos, wireframes for mobile, pitch decks, marketing collateral, and — their words — frontier design with voice, video, shaders, 3D, and built-in AI. I imported an existing site, gave it five to ten images, and let it start asking questions. That’s the workflow. It interviews you, then it builds.

How does Claude Design actually work, step by step?

You start with a design system — think of it as your brand folder. Name, blurb, logo, fonts, colors, a GitHub link if you have one, a Figma file if you have one. I didn’t have a clean Figma file, so I fed it a live website link instead. Claude pulled the colors, fonts, and structure straight from the HTML and answered its own questions from that source. That’s the cheat code if your brand assets are scattered.

Once you hit continue to generation, it burns through tokens. Plan on it taking a few minutes, and plan on it eating a real chunk of your usage. When mine finished, I had 22 separate items to review: logo treatments, voice and tone, color, buttons, badges, form fields, navigation, feature cards. For each one you either approve it or flag “needs work” and give it a note. I told it I wanted shadow on feature cards. It went and added shadow. I said a dark-blue-on-blue heading looked awful. It fixed that too, live, in the same pane.

From SOP to full 3D website

The clearest before-and-after I got was an SOP document. What I started with was, in my words, “plain Jane” — no logo, no visual hierarchy, nothing engaging. What came back once I pointed Claude Design at our new brand system was a completely different document: structured, branded, legible, done. Then I pushed further — I asked it to rebuild a full landing page with 3D animations and interactive elements “wherever you see fit.”

It didn’t just comply. It interviewed me first: full page or section reimagine? Heavy 3D or light? Scroll-driven camera or something else? Full brand-palette autonomy, or stay close to current? I gave it almost total freedom. What it handed back had scroll-driven 3D, an embedded interactive app generator based on a niche I typed in, and editable components I could click and restyle in real time — font color, padding, shadow, copy, all inline.

My honest reaction watching it work: it’s a lot. When a tool can go from a screenshot and a paragraph of notes to a working, animated, on-brand site — and then hand the whole thing off to a code editor as a real project folder — the “I need a web designer” conversation changes permanently.

So what does this mean if you’re paying for design or automation help?

Here’s my take, not a fact from Anthropic’s press materials: as tools like this get better at producing polish, the value in hiring someone shifts more toward judgment — knowing which of those 22 review decisions actually matter for your business, which animation helps conversion versus just looking cool, and when a simpler page beats a flashy one for your actual buyer. Claude Design can’t tell you that a 55-year-old CFO buyer wants three facts and a phone number, not heavy 3D.

That judgment — knowing what to keep, what to cut, and what the tool got confidently wrong — is the part of the work I don’t think a design tool replaces. Not pushing pixels. Deciding what the system should even be trying to do, then checking its work against a business outcome, not a design trend.

The honest gotcha

This thing eats credits. In one extended session of heavy, repeated use, it burned through a meaningful chunk of my monthly credits just from testing. Large images slow it down and are harder for it to retain. It’s still labeled as being in a lab-style stage, so expect it to occasionally override a section you already approved, or hand you a website when you asked for a Word document. It’s genuinely good. It’s not yet a “set it and forget it” tool, and if you go in expecting perfection on the first pass, you’ll be disappointed.

Frequently asked questions

Do I still need a designer if I use Claude Design?

You need someone who understands your brand’s judgment calls — what belongs on the page, what your audience actually responds to, what to cut from those 22 review items. The software will generate the polish. It won’t tell you why a heavy-3D homepage is wrong for a B2B buyer who wants speed over spectacle.

How much does Claude Design cost to actually use?

It runs on Claude’s existing credit system, and design generation is token-heavy. In my own testing, active back-and-forth editing on one project burned through a meaningful chunk of my monthly credits in a single extended session. Budget for it like a real line item, not an afterthought.

Can I export what Claude Design builds into real code?

Yes. You can export and hand the project off directly to Claude Code, download it as a zip, and open the folder in an editor like VS Code to keep building. It’s built to flow from design system into a working project, not stay trapped in the design tool.

Is this the same as using Claude Code?

No — Claude Design sits alongside Claude Code. Design is for the visual layer: brand systems, mockups, presentations, 3D-enhanced sites. Code is where you build and ship the actual application. They’re meant to hand off to each other.

If you’re trying to figure out where a tool like this fits into your actual growth plan — versus where you still need a strategist making the calls — that’s the conversation I have in a strategy session. I also walk through exactly this kind of build with clients inside one-on-one coaching, and if you want the background on how I ended up testing tools like this for a living, that’s on the about page.
